Sherburne-Earlville will participate in the Section 3 Girls Flag Football League as a pilot program this spring after dozens of student-athletes expressed interest in the sport.

Timberwolves varsity football coach Steven Franklin, modified football coach John Fontaine and Robert Carhart will coach the S-E girls flag football program, which has been practicing since the spring JV/varsity sports season opened March 17. S-E girls flag football players have dual-sport eligibility, meaning they can play flag football and another spring sport, if they wish.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association established girls flag football as an emerging sport for the 2023 spring season. Section 3 formed its league for the 2024 spring season and crowned Baldwinsville and Oneida as Division I and II sectional champions, respectively. Both teams advanced to state regionals but fell to Section 4 opponents.

S-E will face both defending sectional champions in its first two varsity games, opening the season at home against Oneida at 6 p.m. April 1 and then visiting Baldwinsville for a 6 p.m. game April 3.

The Timberwolves will play Section 3 Class C rivals Oneida and OnTech twice and face Class A and Class B teams once during the regular season. S-E will be on the road for its second game against Oneida, at 7 p.m. May 1, and will host both meetings with OnTech (no home field), at 6 p.m. April 8 and 6 p.m. May 6.

S-E, OnTech, Central Square and Fayetteville-Manlius are new to the Section 3 league. Central Square is the only Class B team in the league. F-M joins Baldwinsville, Cicero-North Syracuse, Liverpool, Syracuse East and Syracuse West in Class A.
