The Sherburne-Earlville Athletic Department is seeking Athletic Hall of Fame nominees who have brought pride and distinction to the S-E Athletics program through commitment, sacrifice and dedication.

Athletic Hall of Fame inductions take place on odd-numbered years, alternating with Wall of Fame inductions (even-numbered years). Therefore, the next Athletic Hall of Fame class will be honored in 2025.

Sherburne-Earlville honored its Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023 – wrestling coach Richard “Pete” Hausrath and three-sport standout Kelly (Cooman) Kingsbury – on June 21, 2023, during its year-end Athletics Awards Ceremony on campus.

Richard “Pete” Hausrath: The former Sherburne-Earlville wrestling coach, athletics administrator, and referee earned back-to-back Section IV Wrestling Coach of the Year honors in 1978 and 1979. He is a member of the New York chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and has dedicated more than five decades to the sport as both a competitor and a coach at various levels. Pete wrestled for Massapequa High School before joining the Iowa State University wrestling team, which won the NYAC National Championship in the early 1960s. The South New Berlin resident is a retired teacher (40 years) who currently serves Unadilla Valley as an assistant wrestling coach. Also a two-time National Freestyle/Greco Roman coach, camp director and guest clinician, he has trained thousands of youth wrestlers in New York, Iowa, North Dakota, and Minnesota.

Kelly (Cooman) Kingsbury: The Franklin resident and 2001 SEHS graduate set school records in field hockey, track and field, and girls basketball. Her 120 field hockey points from 1998-2000 ranked fifth in Section IV. During the same span, she amassed 47 goals and 26 assists. A First Team all-state selection in 2000, Kelly also set single-season program records for points (41), goals (18) and assists (16). She graduated from Hartwick College in 2005 as the program's top points producer (164) and goal scorer (68), and ranked third in all-time assists (28). A four-time all-state selection in college, Kelly led the Empire 8 Conference in scoring three times and helped the Hawks to the E8 title and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. A 2012 inductee into Hartwick’s Athletics Hall of Fame, Kelly was a First Team All-American, ECAC and Empire 8 Player of the Year, First Team Empire 8, All­-Region, NYSWCAA Scholar-Athlete, and Hartwick Athlete of the Year. Her 36 point-game for S-E girls basketball in 2000 was a program record at the time, and she excelled in track and field (pole vault, 400-meter relay). Kelly served Hartwick as an assistant field hockey coach for three seasons before becoming SUNY Oneonta’s head coach in 2008. She is O-State’s all-time winningest coach, with 127 victories.

Sherburne-Earlville officially honored its Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021 – Basil Anagnost, John “Jake” Klockowski, David Taylor, Gerald Taylor, James Taylor and Richard Taylor – in June of 2022 as the COVID-19 health crisis postponed the district’s second Induction Ceremony for a year.

Basil Anagnost: Sherburne-Earlville’s Class of 1956 salutatorian earned 14 varsity letters – in baseball (4), basketball (3), football (4), and track (3). He captained the football and basketball teams during the 1955-56 school year and helped both programs to three conference championships. His senior year included a First Team all-state selection in football, his second straight conference All-Star honor in basketball, and Section IV All-Star and Babe Ruth Sportsmanship awards in baseball. Basil also was a National Honor Society member who participated in Student Council, Boys State, Chorus and Marching Band/Drum Line. He earned a full scholarship to Cornell University (Class of 1960).

John “Jake” Klockowski: The last living member of S-E’s undefeated and untied football team in 1941, Jake was a three-sport athlete who graduated in 1942. He also excelled in baseball and basketball in high school before earning the WWII Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Service Medal as a member of the U.S. Army. Jake earned a football scholarship from Hartwick College in 1947 and played one season before joining the workforce to support his family.

David Taylor: A University of Rochester Athletic Hall of Famer, David (Class of 1964) led S-E to a 17-3 basketball record and a title as league’s leading scorer with nearly 20 points per game during his senior season. He went on to play for Cornell University and then transferred to Rochester, leading the latter in points and rebounds during his junior and senior college seasons. David, who also played football at S-E, won Rochester’s Louis Alexander Award as a senior and played two years of basketball in Europe.

Gerald Taylor: A varsity letterman in football, basketball and track, Gerald (Class of 1956) helped S-E’s football team to back-to-back league championships and a combined 14-1 record as a starting end during the 1954 and 1955 seasons. He also helped the basketball team to a 19-2 record and the league title by scoring close to 10 points per game as a senior. Gerald, who also held the school pole-vault record for several years, went on to play basketball and lacrosse at Cortland State.

James Taylor: A member of S-E’s undefeated football league champions in 1958, James (Class of 1959) started as a junior and senior for both the varsity football and basketball teams. He went on to play freshman basketball at Syracuse University, where he also competed for three years as a defenseman in men’s lacrosse. James has been a part of three 70-and-over national men’s basketball championship teams, winning titles in 2011 (Houston), 2013 (Cleveland), and 2017 (75+ Birmingham, Alabama).

Richard Taylor: After lettering in football, basketball and baseball during his junior and senior years in high school, Richard (Class of 1952) played four football seasons at Syracuse University. He lettered in college football in 1956, when SU went 7-2 behind Professional Football Hall of Fame running back Jim Brown and finished the season ranked eighth in the country. He also lettered in lacrosse in 1957, helping top-ranked SU to a 10-0 record. Dick’s high school football teams had back-to-back 7-1 campaigns (1950, 1951) and he led S-E’s basketball teams to records of 14-3 in 1951 (league champs) and 13-5 in 1952.

Sherburne-Earlville honored a standout runner, a prolific basketball scorer and two cross country teams during its first Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 18, 2019. Sherburne-Earlville’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class featured former Section 4 champion runner Rob Baker (Class of 1987), former boys basketball star Bob White (Class of 1972), and S-E’s 1989 and 1990 Class C-D state champion boys cross country teams. They were honored in the S-E Middle School/High School Auditorium, just before S-E’s Athletic Awards Night.

Rob Baker: Sherburne-Earlville’s Rob Baker won Section 4 titles in consecutive academic years, taking the Class C 3,200-meter run crown in 1985-86 and the overall sectional 3,200 championship in 1986-87. Rob closed his senior season as Sherburne-Earlville’s Athlete of the Year in 1987, following a 10th-place finish in the 3,200 at the state meet. Also a bronze-medal winner in the 1986 Empire State Games, Rob went on to compete in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field for the United States Naval Academy.

Bob White: Sherburne-Earlville’s Bob White was tough to stop on the basketball court during an era marked by major events in American history. Bob started his scoring tear in 1969, the same year Richard Nixon became our president, Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon, and some of the top rock musicians in the world came together for Woodstock. By the end of his senior season in 1972, Bob had amassed 1,626 varsity boys basketball points, which still stands as the second-highest total in Chenango County history.

1989-1990 Boys Cross Country: Sherburne-Earlville’s 1989 boys cross country team won Susquenango League, Section 4 Class C-D and New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C-D championships. Coached by LeRoy Hodge and Bob Marano, the team featured student-athletes Shane DuBois, Tim French, Paul Johnston, Aaron Jones, Paul Jones, Shane Kellogg and Matt LoPiccolo. Joe Kmetz joined the squad in 1990 and helped S-E to the same string of championships en route to a fourth-place finish in the Federation meet.
